When you sign up for SQE1 Prep with Law Training Centre, you will be given 15 months access to course materials.
To read more on the course features we include as standard click here.
You will have direct access to our approachable team of subject expert tutors when you study SQE1 Prep with us.
You can interact with tutors via two live workshops they deliver each month, focusing on the more challenging topics within the course, as well as through our forums or through email.
It is important that as an online student you do not feel alone, which is why your personal academic coach will be a named person at Law Training Centre that enables you to have a direct point of contact for support.
The Personal Academic Coach will be there to help if you are struggling with managing your studies, need support to balance or organise your studies, and to help you with your CV and offer careers advice. Your Personal Academic Coach may also be able to assist you in collating all the work experience you have completed, allowing you to assess what else you need to do and put in place a plan of action. The Team at Law Training Centre understand the importance of practical skills and are well placed to offer support on how to obtain this in a way that suits you.
Law Training Centre knows that different people learn in different ways, which is why we provide you with access to a bank of different learning materials to suit all study styles. This includes workshops, audio content, flashcards, quizzes, and a complete law library.
Some methods will require your involvement directly, for example our live workshops delivered by expert tutors. Other materials can be used according to your time, which means you can work on the content as and when you are free. The course content will be a mixture of online and downloadable content, allowing you to work offline when needed.
As with any law qualification, you will need to work proactively and independently as you study, however Law Training Centre make it easier for you to take on this challenge.
At Law Training Centre we pride ourselves on our extensive learning materials, available in the form of a responsive e-learning platform, targeted recorded video lectures for key topics, concise written materials, flashcards, and revision materials (online and downloadable).
Our SQE1 Prep students will also receive access to the Law Trove e-book collection and Thomson Reuters Practical Law – the leading online legal knowhow service as used by 130,000 lawyers worldwide.
You will also receive access to our complete video library of workshops, meaning that no matter when you start or what your schedule is, you will have access to our tutors’ expert knowledge.
Law Trove is our online library, consisting of a huge resource bank for both the academic and practice-based law modules. This resource will be vital in helping you to get an in-depth level of understanding as you work through the SQE.
Whether you are an LLB undergraduate or a non-law undergraduate, Law Trove puts you on a level playing field. You can refresh your knowledge as you prepare for the SQE or, if you are approaching law topics for the first time, you can feel confident knowing you have access to Law Trove.
For each of the SQE units you will have access to a mock SQE1 Style Multiple Choice Question paper. This will allow you the chance to utilise the SQE1 Style Multiple Choice Question paper in a way that works for you.
Some students may decide to save the question paper until they complete all their learning and attempt it under timed conditions, which allows the student to experience how it feels to sit the mock paper under timed conditions.
Other students may also find that they prefer to work through a few questions each week – the choice will be yours.
Law Training Centre’s Team will also provide you with other types of consolidation activity that allow you to test your knowledge during your course.
SQE1 Prep by Law Training Centre fees include the exclusive Passplus Guarantee. This guarantees students’ course access and support for one resit, should you need it.
Following a successful completion of SQE1, you have six years to complete the necessary two years QWE and pass SQE2.
You will only be allowed three attempts at each assessment – SQE1 Functioning Legal Knowledge assessment 1, SQE1 Functioning Legal Knowledge assessment 2 and SQE2. This means one sitting and two resits.
You must take any resits within six years of your first SQE sitting. If you fail these, at the end of the six years you can start again from the beginning.
You can find more information here.
You must be 18 years or older to study any course at Law Training Centre. If you are a student that has just finished their college studies, look at the range of courses we offer and we can help you chart your course pathway with Law Training Centre.
If your goal is to become a solicitor, you can do that with Law Training Centre.
The SRA do not appear to offer ‘exemptions’. They do refer to transitional arrangements, which are detailed in the answer to ‘I am already studying to become a solicitor by another route, can I change to the SQE route?’.
Law Training Centre will update you on any changes should they arise.
Yes, you can – the details of how you are able to do this will depend on what qualification you are already working towards. For example a CILEX or CLC Level 6 Diploma may meet the ‘degree equivalent’ requirement to qualify as a solicitor.
To discuss your options please email us with a list of the qualifications you currently hold, and if you are still working towards finishing them, your planned subject choices. One of our advisors will contact you to advise further.
No, our SQE1 Prep course is online and can be studied anywhere around the world.
There are a range of different areas that you will need to cover in your SQE studies. Law Training Centre offers you a fantastic level of resources to ensure you can prepare for these topics. SQE1 will cover:
Principles of taxation will be also assessed in relation to Business Law and Practice, Property Law and Practice, and Wills and the Administration of Estates.
The first SQE1 exam sitting will be in November 2021. You can read more about the SQE1 assessment here.
There are a range of different areas that you will need to cover in your SQE studies. SQE2 will examine legal skills such as:
Students must demonstrate their ability to apply those legal skills across five separate practice areas.
The first SQE2 exam sitting will take place in April 2021. You can read more about the SQE2 assessment here.
There are no entry requirements for you to sit SQE1. However, as SQE is a high stakes assessment, with a limit of three attempts in a six-year period, it is advisable that candidates undergo SQE preparation.
It is expected that most learners will complete their degree/degree equivalent qualification before or alongside preparing for the SQE. Law Training Centre’s flexible online delivery for SQE1 Prep allows learners to fit their SQE preparation around their work and life commitments. To sit SQE2 you must have passed SQE1.
There may be times in legal practice where we see the use of a case name or statutory provision to set out a specific rule or principle. For example, Rylands v Fletcher, CPR Part 36.
Where this is the case, you as the student will need to make sure that you know and utilise the case names or relevant provisions. Other than these situations, you are not required to recall specific case names or include statutory authorities.
The SQE is one of four key components that you will need to fulfil in order to become a solicitor. These four elements are listed below. To allow flexibility in how you qualify, the SRA has not set any order in which you must complete the four elements. Therefore, you can choose when and how you do each part to fit around your own commitments.
From 1 September 2021 to qualify you will need to:
You can find more information here.
A UK qualification can be considered equivalent if it is:
Yes, if it meets the requirements listed under ‘What is a degree equivalent qualification?’.
Yes, it just needs to meet the requirements listed under ‘What is a degree equivalent qualification?’.
The SRA has transitional arrangements in place which are designed to give candidates already on their way to becoming a solicitor the SQE is introduced as much choice as possible. This means someone already studying or training can continue to qualify through the existing routes or choose to do the SQE.
It is the SRA alone that decide on transitional arrangements. Please see the SRA website here for the latest information.
The SQE requires that you are able to evidence that you have completed 2 years of work experience in an appropriate legal setting. It is important that you have understood what is expected or permitted to make sure that you don’t waste your time completing work experience that is not considered suitable.
The QWE may be something you have already completed; it could be that you are about to start your studies on the SQE and are looking to build up that work experience. You may also have worked in legal roles and therefore your Personal Academic Coach can support you to collate that detail.
The work experience has to be signed off by a solicitor that holds a practising certificate. They do not need to be practising, but do need to hold the qualification. They also need to be able to confirm that you have completed the QWE – they will not be asked to sign off your competency, rather that you completed the two year QWE.
Training providers cannot advise on any criminal records and it is important you contact the SRA directly about this.
As part of the process to qualify as a solicitor, they will in fact, take into account the person’s character and suitability for the profession. If you are concerned about this, contact the SRA to query this sooner.
The SRA have confirmed on their website that each time you resit the SQE assessments you will need to pay the full examination costs again. This is unless you are only resitting one part of SQE1 (ie Functioning Legal Knowledge assessment 1 or Functioning Legal Knowledge assessment 2).
CILEX state that CPQ is underpinned by the CILEX Professional Competency Framework, which articulates the activities and behaviours required to progress through the stages of a career in legal practice. CPQ’s three stages (CPQ Foundation, CPQ Advanced and CPQ Professional) therefore are designed to provide a smoother, progressive learning experience and a transition between stages that is in line with a trainee’s progression in the workplace.
CPQ also focuses on a smaller number of core modules, with fewer options, that each combine law and practice to create a more practical and consistent learning experience. Assessments will be delivered online.
CPQ Foundation and CPQ Advanced stages were introduced in June 2021, with CPQ Professional stage set to follow this year. The first assessments for CPQ Foundation and CPQ Advanced stages will be held in January 2022 and the first assessments for CPQ Professional stage will be held in January 2023.
CILEX state that they will always review any previous law qualifications that an applicant has obtained but cannot guarantee that this will lead to an exemption. CILEX have, however, confirmed that exemptions previously granted against the legacy qualifications will carry through to CPQ where they apply. A statement of CILEX’s transitions policy for those studying the legacy CILEX qualifications can be found here. Please note that this is still subject to regulatory approval.
Yes – if learners complete their level 3 Diploma by 2023 they can than decide whether to continue on to level 6 of the legacy qualification or switch to CPQ.
Completing the CILEX Level 3 Diploma is likely to equip learners with the necessary units to gain exemptions against CPQ Foundation stage, and so CILEX advises that students can then either enrol on to CPQ Advanced stage or on to the current Level 6 Diploma.
If a learner chooses to transition to CPQ and begin the Advanced stage, even with full exemptions from their level 3 legacy qualification, they will still be required to complete the ethics and professional responsibility module from the Foundation stage.
Please contact the Law Training Centre team to discuss your personal circumstances and the qualifications you already hold so that we can help advise you on the next stage of your journey.
No, you are not able to qualify as a Solicitor through completing the CPQ alone. CILEX are discussing with the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) about potential exemptions to the new Solicitors Qualifying Exam (SQE) pathway for those people who qualify as CILEX Lawyers via CPQ. It has been confirmed that CILEX Lawyers will be exempt from the Qualifying Work Experience requirement of qualifying as a Solicitor through the SQE.
Please contact the Law Training Centre team to discuss your personal circumstances and the qualifications you already hold so that we can help advise you on the next stage of your journey.
Pathways are available in:
To achieve practice rights in a pathway, students must study both the CPQ Professional stage module and the CPQ Advanced stage module that underpins it.
There are 22 assessed modules in total across CPQ, of which CILEX states that trainees are expected to study a maximum of 12:
The choice of module at CPQ Professional stage must be underpinned by the corresponding module at CPQ Advanced stage. Students must also all complete two Ethics and Professional Responsibility e-learning modules which are delivered directly by CILEX. CILEX also state that students wishing to acquire a practice right in Dispute Resolution, Family Litigation, or Criminal Litigation will also be required to undertake an Advocacy Course.
Law Training Centre’s online courses are entirely self-paced and therefore allow learners to complete their studies flexibly, according to their prior knowledge and experience as well as alongside their personal and professional commitments.
CILEX have, however, estimated that the following timings should be possible:
The first CPQ Foundation and CPQ Advanced stage assessments will be held in January 2022. The first CPQ Professional stage assessments will be held in January 2023.
Each module has one assessment, with the exception of the Professional Skills modules at Foundation and Advanced stages, which have two. This means that a trainee completing the whole of CPQ will sit 14 assessments, as well as completing the two Ethics & Professional Responsibility e-learning modules and Professional Experience at each CPQ stage.
There will be three assessment windows in the first two years following CPQ’s introduction. CILEX have stated they will review demand for subsequent years with the expectation of increasing the number of assessment opportunities over time. Ethics & Professional Responsibility e-learning can be completed at any time of the trainee’s choosing. However, CILEX advise that Ethics & Professional Responsibility 1 is attempted early, as it contains important elements for the trainee to understand as they embark on training as a CILEX Paralegal, CILEX Advanced Paralegal or CILEX Lawyer.
Fellows of CILEX are qualified lawyers, and are allowed to use the title of Chartered Legal Executive (CLE) and the designatory letters FCILEx.
As a Chartered Legal Executive, you can practise unreserved legal activities without supervision and can act as a Commissioner for Oaths (certifying that the declaration in official documents has been signed before a lawyer). Non-reserved legal work includes will writing, some employment law matters and general legal advice.
As a CLE you can only undertake reserved or regulated legal activities if you are under the supervision of a solicitor or other authorised person. Reserved or regulated legal activities are those specified under statute, including the Legal Services Act 2007 and the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999 (s84):
CILEX Lawyer status will be awarded by CILEX to those current members who either have or will have completed professional development and demonstrated their competence against the additional regulatory standards required to obtain practice rights authorisation. The CILEX Lawyer brand acts as a kite mark reflecting the standard required of CILEX members.
CILEX Lawyers are able to undertake one or more of the reserved/regulated legal activities without supervision as a result of holding independent practice rights in their specialist area.
An existing Fellow is a CLE and is awarded these designations upon authorisation by CILEx Regulation.
A CILEX Lawyer is a CLE/Fellow who also has practice rights either through a top-up route or as a new entrant, by achieving all stages of the new CILEX Professional Qualification (CPQ).
As part of the transition to CPQ, a CLE who requires practice rights but has not achieved authorisation by December 2023 will remain a CLE and a Fellow of CILEX but will not be able to use the designation of CILEX Lawyer.
CILEX state that, subject to LSB approval, it is expected that the top-up route will be open to all Chartered Legal Executives who have more than 5 years of qualifying employment in early 2022.
No, CILEX have not registered the new qualifications with Ofqual, and this is why there are no levels comparable with the Legacy qualifications, which were Ofqual registered as Level 3 and Level 6 qualifications respectively. The new CPQ qualifications are accredited directly by CILEX.
There are currently no exemptions awarded by any other legal regulator if you change your mind and wish to move to another qualification pathway. We believe CILEX are in discussions with other regulators regarding exemptions, however, currently it is advisable that any learners signing up to CPQ plan to follow this particular route to becoming a CILEX lawyer. There is currently no guidance for dual qualification by any regulator in terms or dually qualifying with other regulators, or having CPQ exemptions recognised.

At Level 6, all units are assessed under exam conditions as follows:
Assessment options available (for exam-based units)
Yes – Once you have completed your CLC Level 4 qualification you can advance to the CLC Level 6 qualification. Once you have completed Level 6 you will have achieved a degree-equivalent qualification and will be able to choose to continue and qualify as a solicitor via the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) route.
Upon completion of your CLC Level 4 qualification you will also be eligible to qualify as a Registered Conveyancing or Probate Technician once you have completed 6 months work experience in relevant employment.
Upon completion of your CLC Level 6 qualification you will also be eligible to qualify as either a Licensed Conveyancer or Licensed Probate Practitioner – subject to completion of a Statement of Practical experience which confirms that you have been in full or part-time, paid or voluntary employment assisting in the provision of conveyancing or probate services (depending on the qualification and licence being applied for) for at least 1200 chargeable hours. This is based on 25 supervised hours a week for 48 weeks, certified by an authorised person (licensed conveyancer, a solicitor or a FCILEx licensed to offer conveyancing or probate services (as applicable) directly to the public).
On average, each Level 4 unit takes approximately 2-4 months to complete, and each Level 6 unit takes approximately 3-6 months to complete. Completion times will vary from learner to learner, however, and will depend on the time available to study and previous knowledge of the legal area being studied.
Completing both Diplomas (all 8 units) will take, on average, approximately 2-3 years.
All our students receive 2 years access per diploma (4 years access in total) to our online materials and resources allowing them to complete their qualifications at a pace that suits their needs.
You must be 18 or over to enrol and study with Law Training Centre.
All our tutors are law lecturers and practitioners with a wealth of experience in the legal sector. They include firm partners, solicitors and barristers with subject experience, who have been trained to deliver our courses in an interactive and engaging manner.
You will receive bi-monthly live tutorials to have all your questions answered. In addition, you will have access to a personal tutor that you can reach by email/phone/Skype with your queries.
You will have access to mini-assessments as well as mock exams to ensure you are prepared for your final assessment.
For the Level 4 Diplomas and, with the exception of the accountancy unit, you will be examined via a number of assessments, which will take approximately 2 weeks to complete before submitting them for marking. The accountancy unit is assessed via an exam and it will need to be taken either at the your place of work (if it is a firm that is regulated by the CLC, CILEx or the SRA (Solicitors Regulation Authority)) or online, remotely at a suitable location with appropriate technology available in one of our exam centres or at your own regulated firm. All Level 6 units are assessed via exams and can be sat online or at your own regulated firm.
We feel personally invested in our students’ success and, as such, in the highly unlikely event that you are unsuccessful on your first attempt, you can re-submit your assessment for free or, if the unit was assessed via an exam, re-enrol for the unit at no extra cost.
Whilst no prior qualifications are needed, we advise that all students have a minimum GCSE, or equivalent, qualification in English and Maths. If you are unsure, please contact us and we will be happy to provide further guidance. You do not need to have any prior legal qualifications or practical legal experience to start the courses.
If you already hold legal qualifications you may be entitled to exemptions from certain subjects. Exemptions are available for holders of the previous CLC qualifications, LLB, GDL, LPC and CILEx Level 6. Partial exemptions available for CILEx Level 3. This list is not exhaustive and if you hold a legal qualification that is not mentioned here contact us with the details to advise if an exemption will be possible.
